WHO ARE WE?

Inspired by the enduring beauty of Portuguese azulejo tile work, this project explores how cultural heritage can evolve through modern design.
Using laser-cut acrylic, I reinterpret traditional patterns into contemporary forms blending precision technology with the spirit of handcraft.
Each tile reflects a dialogue between past and present, celebrating both the ornamental language of azulejo and the minimalism of modern design.

MY STORY
My story begins with the culture and experiences that shaped my identity as both a person and a designer. These moments form the foundation of the work I create today.
01
WHERE IT ALL STARTED
My parents came from the small town of Arcos de Valdevez in Portugal, where they learned the value of hard work and resilience. Seeking greater opportunities, they made the brave decision to start a new life abroad. Soon after, I was born, a first-generation Portuguese-American who carries their story, culture, and pride into everything I do.

02
GROWING UP
As I grew older, my connection to my heritage only deepened. I became active in the Portuguese community, joining a traditional folklore dance group and participating in cultural events that celebrated our shared history. These experiences shaped my appreciation for craft, storytelling, and the beauty of tradition, values that continue to influence my work as a designer.

03
DESIGNING A PIECE OF ME
My design practice is rooted in the stories and memories that shaped me. This project allowed me to reconnect with Portugal through pattern, color, and symbolism, transforming personal history into contemporary tile-inspired designs. Each piece reflects the balance between honoring tradition and creating something new, offering viewers a glimpse into the culture and experiences that continue to guide my creative voice.
